Following the release of Suzanne Collins 's novel The Hunger Games , on September 14, , Hollywood film studios began looking to adapt the book into film. In March , Color Force , an independent studio founded by producer Nina Jacobson , bought the film rights to the book. The search for a director began in with three directors in the running; David Slade , Sam Mendes , and Gary Ross. In October , scripts were sent to the actors, and casting occurred between March and May The first role cast was of the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen.
The roles of Peeta Mellark , Katniss' fellow tribute, and Gale Hawthorne , her best friend, began casting later that month. Every year, in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of the 12 districts to send a boy and girl tribute between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete in the Hunger Games: a nationally televised event in which the 'tributes' fight each other to the death until one survivor remains.
When Primrose Everdeen is "reaped," her older sister Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her place as tribute to enter the games and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts and knowledge when she's pitted against highly-trained and fierce tributes from all of the other districts and has to think quickly on her feet to survive. Winning means that they must leave their loved ones behind and embark on a Victory Tour throughout the districts for a couple of days.
Along the way Katniss senses a rebellion simmering upon the capitol - one that she and Peeta may have sparked - but the Capitol is still in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Hunger Games - the Third Quarter Quell - that could change Panem forever. Following her rescue from the devastating Quarter Quell, Katniss Everdeen awakes in the complex beneath the supposedly destroyed District Her home, District 12, has been reduced to rubble by the Capitol.
Peeta Mellark was kidnapped by the Capitol and is now brainwashed and being held captive by President Snow. Snow wants Peeta to forget everything he had loved about Katniss. At the same time, Katniss also learns about a secret rebellion spreading throughout all of Panem - a rebellion that will place her at the center of attention and she will have to turn the tables on President Snow.
Realizing the stakes are no longer just for survival, Katniss Everdeen teams up with her closest friends, including Peeta Mellark, Gale Hawthorne and Finnick Odair for the ultimate mission to gain peace. Together, they leave District 13 to liberate the citizens of war that has torn Panem apart more than it has ever been.
President Snow becomes obsessed with destroying Katniss Everdeen and everyone and everything she loves. What lies ahead are mortal traps, dangerous enemies and moral choices that will ultimately determine the future of millions of people. With each on-screen chapter, the poor girl from District 12 continues to fulfill her destiny as an inspiration and a rebel fighter. He praised director Lawrence for "taking a more muscular approach" and "sensibly downplaying" the love triangle, noting that "neither [Peeta nor Gale], quite frankly, are fit to lay a pinky on [Katniss'] quiver".
One fault he did find was in Philip Seymour Hoffman's "surprisingly ineffective performance". Most of the squad escapes, unbeknownst to the Capitol. Katniss refuses to kill Peeta, but Gale states that he would kill him if needed. The Capitol broadcasts another message of Snow's denouncement of the rebellion, but the rebels hijack the air, and Coin gives an impassioned eulogy that rallies the rebels.
Katniss and the Star Squad attempt to advance through the sewers but are caught on camera. They are ambushed by genetically engineered "mutts" that kill four squad members, including Finnick. Snow invites Capitol citizens to take shelter at his mansion, forming a human shield. Katniss and Gale plan to sneak into Snow's mansion to assassinate him.
On the way, a massive explosion disrupts their plan. In the confusion, Peacekeepers herd Capitol children toward the palace gates, when a hovercraft with a Capitol insignia bombs the crowd, causing mass casualties. As the rebel medics, including Katniss's sister Prim, tend to the injured, a second wave of bombs are dropped, killing Prim and knocking Katniss unconscious. Katniss awakens, and Haymitch informs her the rebels have won because the senseless bombing turned the Capitol citizens against Snow.
Katniss confronts Snow, who explains that Coin staged the bombing to turn the Peacekeepers against him. Katniss realizes Gale had suggested a similar strategy to her, and is stunned when Gale cannot deny his part in Prim's death. Coin calls a meeting of the surviving Hunger Games victors, where she declares herself the interim President of Panem. She calls for a vote for a final Hunger Games, but instead using the children of Capitol leaders as revenge. Katniss votes yes, under the condition that she is able to execute Snow.
At Snow's execution, Katniss kills Coin instead, which causes a riot of citizens to also kill Snow. Peeta stops Katniss from committing suicide and she is arrested. When home, she screams at Buttercup that Prim is never coming back, before embracing the cat.
She finds Peeta, who has almost fully recovered from his conditioning and is planting Primrose flowers in the garden. Commander Paylor is elected the new President of Panem. Years later, Katniss and Peeta, now married, play with their two children in a meadow. It was a relief that it was received well by the fans. Even though I was relieved, it was only momentary; it sort of set the bar higher for the next one! On December 6, , Danny Strong announced that he would write the third and fourth films.
He had nearly completed his scenes, and his two remaining scenes were rewritten to compensate for his absence. We had no intention of trying to fake a performance, so we rewrote those scenes to give to other actors… The rest, we just didn't have him appear in those scenes. Scott Mendelson of Forbes noted the similarity of the teaser with that of The Dark Knight ' s teaser, which also features just an animated logo of the film and select dialogue. On June 9, the teaser trailer for the film was released. Later in July , Lionsgate released a motion and teaser poster and propaganda video, followed by the film's official trailer. However, it was taken down shortly thereafter, as the text on the poster appeared to resemble a swear word due to layout. In October , the first official clip and the final trailer were released, followed by the film's theatrical posters.
In certain parts of Israel, the poster which depicted the image of Katniss Lawrence aiming her bow and arrow was removed over concerns her image would offend ultra-conservative Jewish audiences. Instead, a fiery mockingjay in the poster's background replaced Lawrence in marketing materials in multiple locations in Israel including Bnei Brak and West Jerusalem. Lionsgate did not comment on the Israeli marketing campaign.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 fell short of expectations at the box office. Outside North America, the film was released in a total of 92 countries. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for action sequences and performances but criticism for splitting the book into two separate adaptations. The website's critical consensus reads, "With the unflinchingly grim Mockingjay Part 2 , The Hunger Games comes to an exciting, poignant, and overall satisfying conclusion.
Lawrence, Hutcherson, and Sutherland received praise for their performances. The supporting cast's performances, particularly Harrelson, Claflin, and Malone's, were also highly praised, but critics felt their appearances were too brief. Several critics also commented on the film's dark tone, even by comparison to its predecessors. Yeah, well, that luck has run out'.
Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly remarked, "With its political power struggles and prodigious body count, all rendered in a thousand shades of wintry greige, the movie feels less like teen entertainment than a sort of Hunger Games of Thrones. In his review for The Telegraph , he praised the film for "being intense" and lauded the performances of Lawrence and Hoffman.
Benjamin Lee, writing for The Guardian , felt that "the decision to split the final chapter of the dystopian saga into two chapters looms large over a frustratingly-paced mixture of thrilling action and surprisingly dark drama. He praised the ending of the film as "genuinely powerful", and commented that "this might be the most downbeat blockbuster in memory, a film that starts out pitiless and goes downhill from there, save for a fleeting glimmer of hope in the final moments. It's a bold statement about the unforgiving nature of war, unashamedly political in its motives and quietly devastating in its emotional effect.
They've got to let the body get cold, in my opinion. Retrieved February 2, February 2, It isn't until the second book and movie that Katniss actually begins to be in love with him.
Others realize it around her before she does, or is willing to admit it. When she almost loses him in the new game, and Finnick rescues him, her utter relief at seeing him alive makes Finnick realize that her love for Peeta is no longer for show. So, in the games, he often seems to try to sacrifice himself for her without consulting her. Peeta may be trying to be selfless here, but he's not involving Katniss in his decision, even if he thinks that he's be doing what's best for her.
This time, though, it would be children from the Capitol being made to fight to the death for entertainment. When they vote, Katniss votes yes, while Peeta votes no. In the book, he tells them, "This is why we rebelled! On the one hand, we can see why she wouldn't inform Peeta of the plan in order to make his reaction more realistic. He's depleted, thin and hurt. That alone is hard to see. He chokes her, and if it weren't for someone else knocking him out, he would've killed Katniss.
Katniss doesn't seem to be able to make up her mind. She seems to first prefer Gale. Then she's on equal footing with both. Then she swings to Peeta. This movie and book series keep the familiar love triangle alive and well, but this wasn't the best treatment to either Gale and Peeta.
In the book, Gale confides to Peeta that he wished he had volunteered as tribute to do the games with her instead. They go back and forth about who Katniss loves more. In the end, Gale says, "Katniss will pick whoever she thinks she can't survive without.
After they rescue Peeta from the Capitol, they realize that he has been programmed to hurt Katniss. Sending Prim in to learn more, Peeta yells accusations about Katniss. He blames her for his parents' deaths, for the demise of District 12, and then he calls her a monster. Peeta tells Prim that Katniss will destroy them all, and that she needs to be killed.
While Peeta said all of this under the influence of the conditioning, the words are still painful, and they seem to hurt Katniss more than being choked. It could be because Katniss does blame herself, and Peeta is able to pick up on that, making her feel even worse than she already does. Snow tells him he can proceed however he prefers, as long as the Games finish with Katniss dead. Meanwhile, during the Hunger Games, Katniss sees a shimmer of the force field and just as she warned Peeta, he hits the force field at the edge of the arena, which stops his heart, until Finnick is able to revive him, to Katniss's relief.
During the night, a thick, poisonous fog appears. Mags bravely sacrifices herself, to Finnick's grief, so that the other three can outrun the fog, which abruptly halts after a certain distance. They rest in the forest, but are soon attacked by a pack of vicious mutt mandrills. Peeta is unexpectedly saved when the woman from District 6, a morphist, sacrifices herself. They escape to the beach, and are met by Wiress, Beetee, and Johanna at dawn. Wiress is in shock after they went through a section of the arena that rained blood; Beetee is injured and carrying a strange coil of wire.
Wiress discovers that the arena is designed like a clock and every hour a specific attack occurs in its designated section, communicating this by repeating the same phrase: "Tick, tock". The twelve-hour section is pointed to by the tail of the Cornucopia, where a lightning storm strikes around a huge tree.
The six allies go to the Cornucopia to view the clock system more closely, but they are suddenly ambushed by the Careers. Wiress is fatally stabbed by Gloss, but Katniss shoots Gloss in the heart and Johanna kills Cashmere with her axe; Brutus and Enobaria escape. In the control room, Plutarch Heavensbee sets the Cornucopia island spinning to confuse the tributes' ability to tell time, but when Katniss falls off the island and seems about to drown, he abruptly halts. After recovering their weapons, the alliance regroups on the beach.
Katniss and Finnick are accidentally drawn into a section of the clock inhabited by jabberjays which scream identically to their loved ones, torturing them for an hour. Later, Peeta and Katniss discuss leaving the alliance. Katniss knows they will have to fight them once the Careers are dead and she doesn't want to kill Finnick or Beetee, but she must to keep Peeta alive.
Peeta agrees they will leave the alliance after midnight, then mentions that whatever deals she made with Haymitch to keep him alive, Haymitch made promises to Peeta too. Peeta reasons that if Katniss died, he would have nothing to live for, and there are people at home who need her, whereas nobody needs him. Watching from the control room, President Snow shows satisfaction, agreeing that Plutarch predicted accurately that Katniss would reach this point and sacrifice herself.
Plutarch nods, then leaves the room, telling Snow to enjoy the rest of the show. Beetee suggests a plan to electrocute the two remaining tributes outside the alliance, Careers Brutus and Enobaria, using his wire and the tree that is struck by lightning at , connected to the saltwater pool and the damp beach. He tells Finnick and Peeta to protect him near the tree until midnight, while Katniss and Johanna run the end of the wire down to the beach. Katniss and Peeta are very reluctant to separate now, but she agrees to lay the wire when Finnick and Beetee imply she intends to break the alliance.
Katniss tells Peeta she will see him at midnight and departs. When the wire is unexpectedly cut after a distance, Johanna suddenly concusses Katniss, cutting the tracker out of her arm and telling her to stay down, as the Careers are stalking them. She leads Brutus and Enobaria away from the weakened Katniss. Thinking Finnick and Johanna broke the alliance, Katniss tries to find Peeta back at the tree, but finds only Beetee, who was stunned after touching the wire to the force field.
Unable to find Peeta, and hearing the sound of a cannon the indicator of a tribute's death , she calls out for him frantically. When Finnick appears, she prepares to shoot him, but he stops her by repeating Haymitch's last advice: "Remember who the real enemy is".
Changing her mind, Katniss attaches the remaining wire to an arrow. Finnick warns Katniss not to do it, but she shoots at the force field just as the lightning strike occurs, blowing up the tree with hundreds of sparks, and shutting down the forcefield around the arena. This electrocutes Katniss, and causes a power outage in the control room. Katniss is paralyzed by the explosion and is too weak to move or speak.
She opens her eyes and sees burning sections of the arena dome crashing down around her. A hovercraft appears, descends into the wreckage, and picks her up before Katniss passes out. She awakens in the hovercraft with an unconscious Beetee beside her. Entering the cockpit, Katniss picks up a needle, ready to attack, but unexpectedly, she finds Haymitch, Finnick, and Plutarch Heavensbee, revealed to be a rebel agent against Snow.
Plutarch explain that they and the district rebels, along with half of the tributes, had been planning to free her to help support their revolution against the Capitol, as "The Mockingjay"; the hovercraft is headed for District When Katniss learns Peeta and Johanna were captured by the Capitol, she attacks Haymitch for not keeping his promise to save Peeta. Plutarch sedates her, and she awakens days later with Gale by her side, who informs that her family is safe, but District 12 has been destroyed by the Capitol.
Katniss, in shock, horror and sadness, begins to look mad in fury, planning to get revenge against the Capitol, personally. He cited the time needed to write and prep the movie given its tight production schedule as the deciding factor in a joint statement with Lions Gate Entertainment on April 10, This was the sixth highest-grossing opening weekend, the second highest-grossing opening weekend of and the highest-grossing opening weekend in November.
