In many ways he is the most important person in French racing these days as, unlike some of the other leading trainers, he speaks to the press, is happy to give his opinion on subjects of interest to racing professionals and is still working as hard as ever to find new clients and bring new people into racing. He only had to say in an interview that he felt the August sale comes too early now and Arqana felt obliged to reply the following day.
Midday won her third consecutive Group 1 very comfortably, despite the fact that the race had attracted numerous other Group 1 winners and that Olivier Peslier managed to ensure that it was run to suit his mount Plumania. Sarafina for one found herself a long way behind, but Tom Queally on Midday was able to go past without having to ask his mount for everything.
Plumania and Sarafina, who came from behind to snatch third place, will both. Fuisse completed a circuit of the track after dumping Stephane Pasquier going to the start, but in France, where trotters regularly warm up for half an hour or so before a race, this causes less consternation than elsewhere.
Fuisse has always been a high-class colt and has yet to finish worse than fourth in 13 career starts. He had looked good at two, but could only finish fourth in the Criterium International G1 run on heavy ground. At three he was caught close home by Le Havre in the Jockey Club and then missed the remainder of the season.
This year, Fuisse was beaten on his reappearance and on heavy ground in the Prix Jacques le Marois, but has won his four other races. He is by far the best son of Green Tune to date and has clearly earned a place at stud at the end of his career. Prospector, Blushing Groom and Irish River. His dam was initially covered by jumps sires but has since produced the two-year-old Group 1 winner Full Of Gold Gold Away. Group quality juveniles start to emerge The first two juvenile Group 3 winners of the new Longchamp season both looked like potential Group 1 horses.
Grand Vent is a Fabre-trained son of Shirocco, who had disappointed when a short-priced favourite on his debut in July. Six weeks later he returned to the track over a mile at MaisonsLaffitte and came from nowhere to pass his field in a few strides. It could easily have been 12l. She ran green and, having missed the break, pulled her way around the outside of the field, however she never looked like getting beaten and was a neck winner.
We measure our success by the results on the racetrack — not in the sales ring. We rely on young broodmares from good families who have shown above average form themselves and prefer to breed them to proven stallions, ignoring fashion entirely. And we make a big effort to raise our yearlings properly.
Our ratio of pasture acreage to horses is about double compared to an average commercial farm. We have made a conscious decision not to sell in August anymore in order to keep them out on our good land as long as possible. And we only sell what was raised here on the farm. This fall we offer all our colts and two fillies, all of them eligible for the French premiums.

The classy four-year-old daughter of Dushyantor, whose racing exploits in her native Chile are reminiscent of US standout Zenyatta, won her race in front in front of a home crowd of over 60, in Santiago. River, the Sir Cat colt flew by the field at the top of the stretch with an explosive rail run to win with absolute authority under Hector Berrios.
With the victory, Ascot Prince extended his win streak to three and improved his record to four wins in six career starts. Sent off as the favourite under Gonzalo Ulloa, the Heavyweight Champ colt led at every point of call to win by three-quarters of a length over late-closing El Farrero, who has finished second to the victor three times. Porque is trained by Jose Miguel Alvarez, who saddled his first Group 1 winner. Ridden by Edwin Talaverano, she broke alertly and settled in second before overhauling pacesetter Diosa Gaucha at the top of the stretch en route to a 3l victory in the opening leg of the Argentine Triple Crown series.

Sent off as the second betting choice under regular rider Edwin Talaverano, the Espaciado colt unleashed a devastating rally in the stretch to win by 4l. Trained by Carlos Vera, who saddled his first Guineas starter, Es Corino, unbeaten in three starts at three, is campaigned by El Comite and was bred by Haras Vadarkblar.
He earned his fifth victory in 12 career starts and is out of the Potrillazo mare Potricorina. Three-year-old Fahed Jr. Infiernillo, who surrendered a clear lead at the top of the stretch, finished second but was disqualified to third for interference nearing the wire. Murjan, a Kentucky-bred, who was born in March , is considered a three-yearold after July 1 along with the southern hemisphere colts.
He entered the Classic off two towering victories by a combined 26l and he became the first North American-bred colt to win the Guineas since the champion two-yearold Iron And Gold. Under a perfectly executed ride from jockey Benjamin Padilla, Almudena gained command with one furlong remaining and resisted a late challenge from previously unbeaten favorite Cruzada to prevail by threequarters of a length. It was a second consecutive victory for herArgentine-based breeders Haras El Catorce, who also produced the third-place finisher Frida.
He was Candy Ride won the Joaquin S. Candy Ride was a graded stakes winner on both turf and dirt, including the Pacific Classic Stakes G1 , in which he set a Del Mar track record. From 12 crops of racing age, Ride The Rails has sired 23 stakes winners.

Juvenile heroes of the past Sally Duckett takes a look at the winners of the Dewhurst and Middle Park Stakes in , and and the various stories behind them. While success has come from some obvious sources, it was also unexpected for others. He remained unbeaten until meeting Roberto as a four-year-old.
And it all may never have happened as Mill Reef, bred in Virginia by his owner-breeder Mr Paul Mellon, was sent to race in Britain only because it was felt his action was more suited to the European turf tracks. It proved one of the best pieces of advice ever given to an owner. From the very beginning Mill Reef revealed his exceptional talent. Mill Reef made his debut in May in the Salisbury Stakes at Salisbury where he beat a previous winner and the favourite, the Lester Piggott ridden Fireside Chat, by 4l.
After long journey the colt tasted defeat for the first time by the narrowest of margins to another exceptional English-trained twoyear-old, My Swallow. Next time out was the Gimcrack Stakes at York in mid-August, but after a torrential overnight downpour the going turned into a quagmire, and Balding wanted to scratch him from the race.
A below-par display next time out where he beat the filly Hecla by a length in the Imperial Stakes at Sandown was followed in his final run of the season when he easily won the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket by 4l. In a crop of outstanding two-year-olds Mill. While Mill Reef hailed from a. His breeder John Hislop was not a rich man, but sent his colt into training with Major Dick Hern, his wife allegedly making him promise never to sell the horse.
Brigadier Gerard finished his first season unbeaten in four races, including the Middle Park Stakes. Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard, along with My Swallow, all met at the start of in the 2, Guineas, which was one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the year, the three already having won 18 out of their 19 races. The race was taken with ease by Brigadier Gerard, after Mill Reef and My Swallow concentrated too much on beating each other,.
The Brigadier skipped the Derby in order to remain over a mile winning the St. He finished his career with two more wins in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes setting a new course record to win in style by 6l and the Champion Stakes. But after a narrow win in the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs, by a neck from Homeric, Mill Reef was found to be suffering from a heavy virus and the rematch had to be postponed.
After a. They were so close they looked as if they were already walking down the aisle. In Ravi Tikkoo, then 40, founded Globtik Tankers, which was to make maritime history, as well as his personal fortune. Globtik Tankers became renowned for building some of the largest ships that have ever existed and they ruled the seas in the s.
Tikkoo was not afraid to meet battles head on and, allegedly, was happy to resort to violence if needed. In when his crew members went on strike on the Globtik Venus for more pay Tikkoo had apparently circumvented various rulings obliging him to pay a set rate to his crew , supposedly Tikkoo hired armed mercenaries and sent them. That was done under the pretence of them being a replacement crew, which quite clearly they were not.
When Tikkoo pulled out of British racing in protest at VAT rates on bloodstock in , sending his horses into training in France, Breasley moved with him to Chantilly. Things in France ended acrimoniously when one of their horses, Java Rajah, was.
The horses and Breasley were moved again, this time over the Atlantic and 40 Tikkooowned horses suddenly arrived in New York in the winter of Among them was Hunza Dancer, who had finished third to Grundy in the Derby. He became a big success stateside where his wins included the Bowling Green Handicap. But that move did not last long either, and by the late summer of Breasley was back in Britain. Piggott rode the horse, winning his fourth Middle Park six in total.
He was exported to Japan as a sire. There are little to no references to his performance in the east. In , after spending 10 years in the Bahamas, Tikoo returned to Britain determined to get his super cruiseship plans up and running again, believing it had a better chance of succeeding this time and could create thousands of jobs at the shipyard.
Sadly, the plans seemed to have drowned once more. In the trio told their agent Tom Cooper that there was no limit on what they would pay for the colt by Northern Dancer out of the Windfields Group 1-winning mare South Ocean. They named him Storm Bird. The plan at Ballydoyle was to head to the Dewhurst in a route that the gang had successfully marched down before in their stallion-making conquests. At Newmarket, with the race run that year on soft going, he met To-Agori-Mou, who had himself won three on the bounce, including the Solario Stakes, and Miswaki, winner of the Group 1 Prix de la Salamandre.
In the end the race turned into a match — and one of the best races for the Dewhurst ever seen. Storm Bird and To-Agori-Mou kicked at the bushes and quickly put 6l between themselves and their field. Head to head they travelled until the Irish colt dug to the bottom of his heart to put himself in front. Storm Bird finished that season as the champion juvenile. The racing world eagerly looked ahead to a rematch in the Guineas.
But through the winter a stable lad, who. It was felt by those closest to the horse that this attack finished him — he lost his sparkle on the gallops, picked up a virus. After intense negotiations, Sangster and his group sold a 75 per cent interest in Storm Bird to Dr. The horse went on to win the Guineas thus fully franking the form of the Dewhurst. It was a result that stirred the wheels of bloodstock commerce and a US group declared an interest. Not only did Sangster and the the Irishmen make a large fortune out of the horse — they also bought him back in the s.
Storm Bird also sired the Preakness winner Summer Squall and the Irish champion sprinter Bluebird, while the first three home in the Kentucky Derby all traced to him. European filly champions Balachine and Indian Skimmer were also by him and in total he has had 62 black-type winners. He has also become a distinguished broodmare sire — Belmont winner Birdstone is out of a Storm Bird mare and he has had eight champions out of his mares and black-type winners, including Thunder Gulch and Medicean.
Famous colours go head to head in the Middle Park Stakes. Prospector was second to Hector Protector. Despite his consistency at the highest level, by failing to win the horse is almost devoid of record. Lycius was bred by John C and Betty Mabee.
That small investment led to the founding. The farm began with a handful of horses but expanded to more than racing and breeding horses — supplemented by an additional that were quartered in Kentucky. During a highly successful run through. In the Mabees were the leading breeders in North America, and in they bred 25 stakes winners, and topped that in when they bred a record According to bloodhorse.
John Mabee died in after suffering from a stroke, while his wife Betty died last February. It is raced on the turf for fillies and mares, age three or older, at a distance of one and oneeighth miles. It was a particularly poignant success as John C Mabee had acted on the board of directors at the track and had helped take the course to new heights. Following the death of her husband in , Betty agreed to join the board of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club as a director, a role she served in until , when she took on the title of Director Emeritus.
Doff The Derby was a half-sister to the exceptional mare Trillion, the dam of multiple Group 1 winner and champion Triptych. As a two-yea-old, Gernerous made an impressive debut at Ascot winning the Garter Stakes. He reappeared in the Coventry Stakes. His brother owned the Derby winner Oath.
Both men are now dead. In he was transferred to Japan. He stood his last season in New Zealand in when Glamorgan was sold. He has left eight stakes winners — only three Group winners — from his five southern hemisphere seasons. A disappointing performance in the Prix Morny was put behind him when successful with a strong come-from-behind win in the Reference Point Stakes at Sandown Park.
Any further doubts as to his abilities were dispelled by his Dewhurst Stakes G1 victory from Bog Trotter. In early , Generous suffered a hoof injury, hampering his preparations for the 2, Guineas, and the best he could do was fourth behind Mystiko and Lycius. That was all put behind him in the Derby where he ran away from the field and won by 5l from Marju under Alan Munro, who shocked TV viewers with his American riding style.
The betting favourite, Generous made a charge as the field turned for home and moved into second position before fading badly and finishing eighth in the field of Unfortunately his results were moderate and despite getting some of the best mares,. He is still listed under the farm ownership. He is the sire of 39 European stakes winners, and is a well-regarded NH sire. He died from a heart attack in , a year before his brother, Prince Ahmed, suffered the same fate.
Prince Ahmed is one of only four men to have raced both a Kentucky Derby winner and an Epsom Derby winner. The others are John W. Galbreath, Michael Tabor, and Paul Mellon. While many things at Lavington Stud appear to have remained unchanged since the stud was first purchased and developed in by James Buchanan, the 1st Lord Woolavington, — and, remarkably, the stud is in the same family ownership — there have been changes in recent years; stallions have been moved on, the business has been reorganised, staff numbers cut.
The stallions we had were good, but not top class so we took a view that the stallion operation should cease. And the success finds its roots in the equine families which have been nurtured and developed by the farm, now owned by Alastair Macdonald-Buchanan, who has taken over from his father Captain John. It is run by stud manager Tim Read. She became a champion older mare in Ireland and has become a foundation mare.
We have had 12 lines stretching back to her. It is fitting that the farm has enjoyed such success courtesy of one its own broodmare families as in Read and the Macdonald-. Above, Danehill Dancer ex Dominante yearling and below a yearling enjoys an extra tasty leaf from one of the trees that line the stud, which is found at the base of the South Downs.
Right, the old iron railings, part of the fabric of the past. They have always been painted in black and white in an echo of the whisky brand. The stud gets schoolchildren down to do the repainting job each summer. His parents returned to their homeland shortly after he was born and he was brought up in Larne, County Antrim in Northern Ireland.
At 14, Buchanan joined a Glasgow shipping firm as an office boy before being quickly promoted to a clerk. In he joined his brother in the grain business until, in , he moved to London as an agent for a company that sold whisky. Quickly realising that there seemed to be an untapped market in England for bottled Scotch whisky, he set about producing his own, the Buchanan Blend, which is still available today and is known as the Black and White whisky.
Buchanan became interested in racing during a trip to Argentina and on his return leased Queensberry Lodge stables at Newmarket, from which his Argentinian trainer Alvarez operated. From there he raced horses under the name of Mr Kincaid.
Fred Darling trained the undefeated Hurry On, who became the foundation sire for the Lavington. His son Coronach also stood at Lavington and became sire of Montrose and Corrida, who remains the only filly to win the Arc de Triomphe twice. Lord Woolavington died in , and his daughter Catherine, Lady MacdonaldBuchanan, sold the main house, which has since been turned into a school, but kept the stud, developing the enterprise further with the purchase of Lordship and Egerton Studs in Newmarket.
He stood at Egerton Stud, which also stood the indomitable Brigadier Gerard. In , Lady Macdonald-Buchanan decided to focus attention solely on Lavington and the Newmarket studs were sold off. She died in The stud farm at Lavington has since been maintained by her son Captain John MacdonaldBuchanan and now his son Alastair, who rode as an amateur both under Rules and in point-topoints.
The family lives at Cottesbrook Hall in Northamptonshire, which has an award-winning garden, as well as the largest privately owned equestrian and sporting art collection in Europe. Known as The Woolavington Collection, it is probably only surpassed worldwide by the Mellon Collection.
It was moved from Lavington to Cottesbrook in the s. I have gone from dealing with early morning calls to book in a mare to visit a stallion to dealing with a leaking tap in one of the cottages in the village. Buchanans decided to bring an end to its stallion business, moving Piccolo and Imperial Dancer to new homes in order to concentrate on the broodmare band at Lavington.
It was not a decision that was taken lightly as stallions had been standing at Lavington since when Black Sand, a winner of the Cesarewitch Handicap and owned by James Buchanan, was retired to the farm. So we thought, why compete? Besides we could not offer the deals that the big camps were offering so we decided to concentrate on the quality of our own broodmare band.
We also ended up with far more staff than we needed. At our height we had 18 or 19 staff, and all had houses on the estate. I think Lanwades was short of a stallion at the time and she mentioned that. It was just quiet. While it would be tempting to believe that the stud, which is not one to over-promote itself, is just locked into its old school philosophy, seeing out its life as one last link to those former glorious racedays, it is however looking brightly to the future as a commercial enterprise.
Connections are still keen to make the most of its heritage and the natural geographical advantages that the farm enjoys and which have gone a long way to ensuring its survival as a family farm for those years. It is not by chance that the Macdonald-Buchanans have become one of the few families to have weathered ownership of a private stud for so long and through such a tumultuous period.
But times change — at one time we had horses here and had to hire stables; now we have 60 horses on the farm. But the farm is certainly not on a downward spiral into non-existence — the ambitions are there to make it a moneyspinning facility. So we can easily take in at least another 10 boarding mares. And Lavington really is something of a British equine idyll — even at the end of this summer the grass in the paddocks was still flourishing and would not be out of place on a farm in Tipperary.
We walk in all the mares based here, which we feel is best for their routine. Her name was In The Groove. She is back in training now and if she is any good, she will go out to the US. All bar one — the Cape Cross younger brother to Sans Frontieres — of the five that it is taking to Book 1 are from the Claxon family developed by nearby Hesmonds Stud, with which Lavington has close ties. The trainers did not initially go to Book 1 and instead would wait for Book 2. Now, however, with the Millions series, trainers have been encouraged to go to Book 1.
The farm has also been spreading its wings overseas and has been running a few in the US, resulting in instant success with Rosinka, who was a Grade 1 runner-up. Out there she became one of the top fillies of the year and won us over half a million in prize-money. She had a nasty habit of drifting right in her races and she was leading in the Flower Bowl, drifted and Lahudood got to her. She was beaten by just three-quarters of a length. He gets to go to US, I go to Folkestone!
This has been achieved at Lavington for years and is an ongoing acheivement. Sans Frontieres is the current flag carrier. Perhaps it is due to divine intervention that the horse has turned out to be so good! In order to try and achieve these goals the farm is not shy of bringing in outside advice.
In the last year it has been visited by Kentucky agronomists and nutritional. That is how it works. He was just one of those sort of foals who always knew he was quite good. My daughter Catherine married three years ago and we brought the local vicar up here to see the foals as he loves horses. We showed him the Galileo and said we hoped he might become quite good.
The pendulum of success can swing widely between a youngster becoming a stakes horse or an also-ran, and once the yearling has left the farm the stud really can only become an observer. By that had increased to seven and, in , numbers have mushroomed to 17, with a number of juveniles purchased for reasonable sums at the spring breezeup sales.
Broodmares have also been bought, with the purchase of Sugar Free at the Tattersalls December Sale last winter for ,gns a not insignificant investment in the future. It certainly signifies that Tinkler is planning involvement in this sport for some years to come. We subsequently. Andrew and Alison are really nice people, they are down to earth and realistic about racing. They are extremely ambitious, but know that it is going to take time.
Foals enjoying the sunshine: the barns of Brook Stud can be seen in the background, while Cheveley church tower is in the far distance. While google entries may not provide numerous links to extensive interviews with Woods, what it does list are a great many sales purchases at DBS and Tattersalls — in particularly through the last year.
Woods has been creating a great many online references to his business in the last year or so as a buyer for Andrew Tinkler, CEO of Stobarts, a man who is currently investing in racing as well as developing bloodstock interests. Some things are just set in stone.
This is Keeneland in November. She is in foal to Duke Of Marmalade. She is a beautiful mare. He has quickly grasped the essentials of racing and really enjoys looking at pedigrees and going through catalogues. He goes racing a lot and has already got involved in race sponsorship.
He is great for racing and people such as him are just what this sport needs. Despite just over-hearing one side of the conversation, the excited postrace vibes from Tinkler crackle through the phone line. It is the sort of horse that I have always bought. They are headlined by Galileo and Pivotal fillies and a Shamardal colt for Book 1, with another five earmarked to sell in Book 2.
Brook Stud, which was bought by Dwayne and his brother Wendyll, who manages the farm, is not yet set up to consign yearlings. But it is a path that the farm is looking to head down. They oversaw the birth of around 60 foals from mares based permanently at the farm and those boarding at Brook walking in to local stallions. None of this activity would be obvious when first driving into the stud, which is found in Cheveley, near Newmarket.
From the road, you would have no idea that the stud is even there, while from the paddocks you would not realise that the boundary on one side is a village. We have good moisture levels in the soil all year — even this summer, when it was so dry, we were still topping the grass. Former jockey Wendyll, who rode for a long time in Hong Kong, has main responsibility for looking after the Far Eastern clients and owners.
I was very happy to move them on; some I gave away and they were nice mares too! Woods would clearly love to resume a stallion business at Brook — the farm at one time having stood Petition, who was a champion sire in and sire of Petite Etoile and numerous stallions since, the last being Kalaglow. We are all ready for a stallion — we just have not found one and competition is fierce.
He had only been race-riding for two years and was obviously in the process of planning himself a long future as a jockey, all of which was away from him in a flash. His practical, sensible and no-nonsense attitude to that life-changing moment is.
The most fantastic thing about Brook for us is that racing has provided it for us. There is no outside money and we have all earned our money through the sport. The horses on the hill: the gentle undulating nature of Brook Stud means that the banks offer shelter for those horses at grass, while all the rainwater drains to the stream found at the heart of the farm.
I chose to be a jockey and the accident happened while I was riding so that was fine. But, if it had happened when crossing the road, well, I think I would have found that devastating. Nothing was geared at all towards the disabled. And that is in all areas from providing facilities for the disabled to the designing state-of-the-art wheelchairs. If you want to find something to complain about then you always will. Why should you expect the world to adapt to you, you should adapt to it? I do not have a problem — in fact, I think I have an advantage as I am lower down and closer to the action!
He and wife Jessica live at Brook and are involved with the farm, while brother Sean trains in Hong Kong. Do valuable sales races such as the Tattersalls Millions series conflict with the Pattern series or can they work together, asks Julian Smyth.
ACING is short on growth areas at the moment. Even the fixture list is being tamed, trimmed. So when expansion manifests itself, it should surely be encouraged. When that expansion trails increased reward in its wake, encouragement. The Millions series is open only to those horses sold at Book 1 of the Tattersalls. Those who buy horses here come for the depth of pedigree which could manifest itself in producing a champion racehorse and stallion and the appearance of the yearlings themselves, not necessarily for the financial carrot proffered by the sales.
Above, trainer Michael Jarvis right and right Anthony Oppenheimer are both concerned as to the effect that sales races have on the Pattern series. Conversely, trainer Ian Wood has a bunch of owners who are planning on clubbing together to buy a horse in order to target the series. The most tangible rewards are available to buyers, of course. At that level of the sport prize-money is not very good, so this is a very welcome initiative. It depends on the individual owner, but many are looking at black type for their purchases.
Julie Wood with her husband Chris. Wood believes that the Millions scheme is a huge incentive. Do these races have a deleterious effect upon the Pattern system? Those horses who may lack the class for Group races — not every yearling in Book 1 is a superstar in waiting — or versatile ones with an excess of opportunity are most likely to benefit from the Millions concept.
Zebedee has a multitude of options ahead in Group company, and his Millions success detracted not at all from his pursuit of the Pattern. Khor Sheed has taken her chance in Group company, running well enough to suggest she has the required class for Group company without troubling the top echelon. And I Love Me was making her debut; evidently a filly with ability, Group races may be on the cards next year.
These three show the diversity of the horses currently winning the Tattersalls Millions. These are the horses and connections it was devised to serve. Cherry Hinton Stakes. For that type of horse, the Pattern provides a greater lure than any sales race. He has his reservations, though. The lure of black-type is too strong. The whole thing gives me enormous pleasure.
She has gone on to succeed at Group 1 level. Her run in the sales race is one of only two runs she has had outside of stakes race company. There is certainly the possibility of a race for everyone, and in these straitened days for owners that promise is not to be taken lightly. The money is very good — exceptional for the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy, the most valuable of the eight — and it allows every buyer at the Book 1 sale to believe they have a chance of recouping most, if not all, of their initial financial commitment.
There will always be doubts about the effect of new races on the established order — racing is a reactionary sport, after all — but the Tattersalls Millions can only be beneficial for owners, who are buying horses in any case.
This good turn done to owners is also passed on through them to vendors and breeders, trainers and jockeys, and of course the sales company reaps its own harvest. There are yearlings catalogued in Book 1, a great argosy of immature potential. One or two of them might win a Classic, a dozen might win Group races, a couple of hundred might win a race however small. Eight of them will win a Tattersalls Millions race. Buyers have returned, and more exciting than anything, new faces with money have appeared.
The new format of abbreviating the first select sessions to horses and shifting the start time to the evening helped to eliminate the dreary sameness of the long two weeks and recalled the glamour of the defunct Keeneland July.
Top lot: opposite Hip 14, the A. Below, the lucky buyer, Benjamin Leon, who bought for his Besilu Stable. Not quite back to perkiness, but they were nonetheless able to smile cautiously and were readying themselves to get back to normal as soon as possible.
Keeneland has done a good job of selecting for this session both physically and on pedigree. Buyers were pleased with the offering concentrating the heavy hitters on the first two nights. The buyers here are serious. At Saratoga there are more tourists mixed in, people wandering over from the races to look. But here, you know they are here to buy. Sale, which had been conducted with the auctioneers in tuxedos.
Gainesway Farm led all consignors in clearance rate last year, carefully placing horses in the right sessions at the right sales to get them sold. Bloodstock director Michael Hernon was one of the fans of the change to the night time format. Hopefully, it will encourage buyers to bid one. Sheikh Hamdan even made a rare appearance at the sale during Book 2; Sheikh Mohammed avoided Kentucky altogether.
Year It was the fear of a fall off from the first book that prompted the ballooning of the second book, so that top individuals were spread out onto more days and buyers would stay for a few more sessions. This plan did not meet with eager approval from all fronts, however. Consignors had to spread their staff and resources thinly into three barns, and even large outfits that are accustomed to being in two barns at once, were strained by having horses showing in.
The inability to watch who was looking at which horses frustrated most consignors. They need to be present to ensure the right horses are in front of prospective buyers, to know where the money is in order to set proper reserves and simply to ensure that the yearlings show well and answer questions from lookers. That additional stress was not what they needed.
Consignors were still holding their breath going into Book 2, worried that buyers would leave before Friday, thinking that the horses near the end of the book were not worth seeing, even though they were listed alphabetically. But when the numbers came back, the exhalation was one of relief after the massive four-day stretch.
For the first six sessions that comprised. Buyers were having a hard time obtaining horses they liked, and were not finding bargains, particularly if looking for fillies. Often when horses did not meet their reserves, they were because the owners were just as happy to keep the individual themselves. This is the last group of high stud fees to go through the ring, so pinhookers were back in swinging.
Unfortunately it still hurt those breeders with a substantial investment. This is where it should be. I have been privileged to have some exceptional Assistant Trainers over the years and Ed has been right up there with the best. He has all the qualities I like to see in a young man embarking on a training career. Many agreed with that assessment, and Guiness McFadden, the bloodstock director at Three Chimneys Farm, adjusted reserve prices in order to align better with the market.
A year-old Cuban immigrant who came to the US at 15, Leon built up a medical insurance company. He sold it for several hundred million dollars a year ago, and began to buy thoroughbreds in order to fulfill a lifelong passion. A breeder of Paso Finos for 29 years, he knows horses and with the guidance of J.
Mike Ryan purchased him for a client whom he would not identify except to say that he had been active in racing before, but is a new client to himself. Many of the usual suspects, including Zayat Stables who declared bankruptcy earlier in the year also held up the US end, but international buyers remained a key factor on which consignors hung their hats. Farish, the former Ambassador to Britain, eagerly anticipated that improving economies around the world would help bring foreign investment to the sale, particularly during the latter half.
Oasis Dream was seemingly getting new stakes winners every day this summer. Alan Porter analyses the matches which have produced a variety of winners. Then, while both were and are, consistently successful sires, both had to wait until relatively late in their stud careers for the emergence of potential heirs, or at least as far as Europe is concerned. He followed his Guineas efforts with another outing at a mile, finishing second to. Oasis Dream: the stallion and the racehorse.
Bottom, right winning the July Cup with jockey Richard Hughes. Choisir finished second. A son of Danzig, out of a Sir Ivor mare, and from a stellar family, Green Desert — a Group 1-winning sprinter, with a classic placing on his resume — was the definition of quality speed. As such, one of the principal uses breeders made of him was to inject speed into stayingbred mares. The strategy never resuted in a true top-class, middle-distance horse, as for the most part Green Desert has resolutely remained a sire of sprinters and milers.
Oasis Dream-sired lots Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 3 16 23 61 74 91 She is not stoutly bred, but has won all her races over distances between 1m2f and 1m4f. From 60 starters out of mares by Mr. Prospector, his sons and his grandsons, there are only four Oasis Dream stakes winners. He is of out. Leger course and distance. Incidently, despite the differences in aptitude the pedigrees of Green Desert and Hope, they present rather paralled patterns.
The relatively stout background to the distaff side of his pedigree had little impact on Oasis Dream, the racehorse. For Oasis Dream, the sire, however, it has been a different story. From his first three crops aged three-year-olds and upwards, he has sired 33 stakes winners, 21 of them Group. Oddly enough, his star runner Midday, who is a Group 1 winner over 1m4f, is neither particularly stoutly bred, nor from a cross that has proved to be particularly prolific for Oasis Dream.
One of those is another of his top runners, the Grand Criterium G1 captor Naaqoos. He is out of. He also has Group 2 winner Showcasing out of a mare by Zafonic Gone West , a horse from the same sire line and female line as the dam of Midday Mr. Prospector and Mofida. He also has Listed winner La Sylvia from a mare by Mujtahid. Numerically, the most successful cross for Oasis Dream has been back over mares from his own Northern Dancer line, this supplying 15 of his stakes winners.
Over mares by sons and grandsons of Northern Dancer, he has 10 stakes winners from 75 starters, a strike-rate around double that he has achieved with Mr. Particularly prolific has been the cross over mares from the Nijinsky line, which has produced six stakes winners.
The five-year-old had been undefeated in six outings this year, all in graded stakes, and at distances from 6f to 1m2f, including the Gamely Stakes. Marketing Cherry Hinton Stks. Crossing him back over Mill Reef line mares is a formula that has proved highly successful with four stakes winners from only ten starters.
The other stakes. She is out of a mare by Deploy with a second dam by Zafonic. The combination of Danzig and Sharpen Up has long been known to be a good one, including via Green Desert, and Oasis Dream is no exception. He has four stakes winners from 14 starters out of mares by sons of Sharpen Up. Three of these are out of daughters of Selkirk. He is another Oasis Dream stakes winner from the family of Mofida, who of course is in the female line of Zafonic. But back to Danehill.
Although the. She had a parrot mouth, was back at the knee and as a yearling was extremely gangly. John Dunlop came to see her and refused to have her. Gerard Butler also turned her down. And Dolores, who achieved such a feat courtesy of Samuel and Duncan in September, is indeed very special. Not only has she produced three black-type performers from her four foals who have run, she was also a cut above the average performer herself.
You would be forced to have to admit that a Danehill covering for her dam would have seemed a little over ambitious at the time. Agnus had only won a small race in Belgium, Dolores was her first foal, Agnus was out of a mare who was unplaced, while her halfbrother, Wavy Run, was a champion, but in Spain!
Actually Wavy Run, on transferring to the US, did produce some recognisable black-. So in Agnus really did not seem the obvious mate for him. But while mating and breeding plans can be cogitated and reworked and mulled over for years by the most expert of experts, in this instance it all came down to a lastminute decision for a self-proclaimed novice among the breeding ranks.
I bought her in foal to Machiavellian — I had not got a clue about him — and sold him to Henry Cecil. The spring came round and it was time for Cooper to put her mare put back in foal once again — it proved to be a more difficult job than she had bargained for.
I tried everyone but they all turned Agnus away, and I think they just thought I was a bimbo! It has to be a matter of some debate as to whether the boys from Coolmore are frequently given over to dashing to the rescue of a damsel in distress — some would say only if there were something financially beneficial in it for themselves.
Whether it was a case of gentlemanly behaviour or not, and putting cynicism aside, Cooper found her answer in the fields of Tipperary. I told him how sorry I was to hear that and how awful it was for him. It was not until I looked him up that I realised that he was a son of Danzig and Agnus was a daughter of In The Wings — no one was inbreeding then.
So I rang him and told him to stop — but he told me it was too late! But while she did not suffer from any hideous incestuous birth defects eminating from inbreeding, she was not a babe — something her devoted breeder was forced to admit as she again went on the hunt for some help. Cooper did not experience such troubles getting a place at stud for Dolores as she did with Angus and the mare was sent first to Sakhee, a mating which resulted in Samuel.
He put in two Listed placed performances at three, then finished third in the Yorkshire Cup, before winning and being placed at Listed level at four. Last time out that July, he tweaked a tendon which necessitated a month break from racing. On returning to action this July, Samuel resumed the Listed-placed form before stepping up to win the 2m2f Doncaster Cup G2. Duncan arrived in , the year after Samuel. From the first crop of Dalakhani, he has run 14 times and won four with the first of those victories coming on his third career start at three at Pontefract.
He was put away for the season after a third in the Rose of Lancaster Stakes G3. Cooper is happy to let trainer John Gosden decide whether or not to mount an Arc challenge with Duncan and while she admits it would be a huge thrill to have him run in the race, the self-effacing breeder does not seek the glory of a run in the Group 1 seasonal highlight if the pair really feel that he is not going to be good enough.
Dolores has since produced Howard, who unfortunately was not enamoured with the racing game, and Deidre Dubawi who has been Listed placed. The luck for Dolores has turned a little against her as she has since had two foals die by Pivotal and Halling and was barren to Dubawi and so Cooper, worried that she might not get a filly out of her star mare, promptly retired Deidre once she had achieved her black-type.
The filly will visit Dalakhani next spring. Dolores, meanwhile, is to be tested to Sea The Stars while this publication is at the printers. Mandalay Bay Casino Stinks. I've been to Vegas more times than I can count.
I went to Mandalay Bay many years ago and it seemed ok. The funny thing about Vegas is that casinos change a lot over time. They get old, the machines aren't updated, and the vibe changes. This is true for Mandalay Bay. Over the years I went one other time and it was dead so we haven't been in a long time until this trip. We decided to pop in and see if anything had changed.
No it hasn't and if anything it's gotten worse. It's dark, dated and all the machines are really far apart so it seems more empty than it is. To be fair, there was a decent amount of some modern slot machines but the worst part of all was the smell.
I have never smelled a casino so nauseating in any casino anywhere! It was a sickening perfumey smell they are using to cover up the smoke I guess but it was sickening to me. We could not stay and left pretty quick. Mandalay Bay's vibe is dead, it needs better lighting and a complete refresh in the worst way.
We will not return. Don't expect any gratis from the machines. Nice updated casino with free parking at the moment. I have to admit, like other reviewers, the machines while plenty of them and were clean and had plenty of people walking around cleaning between players were no go pay out or free spins. Did not spend much there since after 20 bucks and no so much as a free spin, I was out of there. Susan H wrote a review Sep Tacoma, Washington 2, contributions helpful votes.
