Scaled-down PS3 race with gorgeous graphics. Forza Motorsport 2. If racing's your thing, a must-have Xbox title! And loading the menu every time I finish a race, just to be allowed to choose a new race and then waiting for that race to load gets to be very irritating after a while. Which is a shame, because the racing in Dirt 2 is great.

Codemasters again prove that they are masters of mixing arcade and simulation in a racing game. The cars feel heavy, the turns require accuracy, but the game isn't as merciless as the more simulator-like competitors on the market. It's about active drifting and brutal battling with your competition. It's about taking risks. When the speedometer is peaking and your car races past trees and dunes while wobbling unsteadily at every bump in the road, you feel on the verge of loosing control.

This feeling of pushing yourself to your limits, and beyond, is what makes racing in Dirt 2 so lovely. Graphically it's beautiful. Smoke and particle effects, combined with lovely background graphics makes this one of the prettiest racers I have seen. You can literally feel the heat from the desert sand, or the moist Indonesian jungle air from the crisp graphics. Dirt 2 is beautiful all the time: in the menus, the loading screens, and when racing. The sound is equally great, except the rather mundane soundtrack with rock music.

Despite having several different race types, I miss some more variation both in the car park, but also between the different races. The different cars feel very similar in races. Codemasters wants to taking the racing culture seriously, something they accomplish very well in the atmospheric menus. They also get a little bit of help from international racing stars like Ken Block.

Other racers talk to you and send you messages, and eventually end up as your buddies. The whole package makes me feel like a part of the rally circuit. Dirt 2 is another demonstration of Codemasters' almost perfect understanding of what makes a racing game fun.

But as I built up my career and progressed through the game I found the long loading times and the atmospheric menus got more and more annoying, and actually made the game less fun to play in the end. It really is a hassle to be forced to wait ages to be allowed to choose a new race. But it's an irritation I forget as soon as I sit behind the wheel again and cruise through Japanese streets or over Slovenian mountains.

Then it's about me, my car and the road and a powerful engine hurtling me through a lovely rendered landscape at breakneck speed. Colin McRae might be dead, but his games live on. Dirt 2 embraces the X-Games Rally-culture, and we like it a lot. Gamereactor uses cookies to ensure that we give you the best browsing experience on our website. For the first few hours it's a thrill to return to your trailer between the races to watch TV, study the fans walking by, and selecting a new race. The first few hours, mind you. This interactive menu is graphically very demanding, and takes ages to load. And you will grow tired of waiting.

Believe me. After four hours with Dirt 2 the statistics proclaim I've spent a mere 37 hours behind the wheel. Sure, I've been dabbling with decorating my cars or watching TV in the trailer, but I've mainly been trying to race. And loading the menu every time I finish a race, just to be allowed to choose a new race and then waiting for that race to load gets to be very irritating after a while.

Gaming Target. Though some parts of the game tend to be frustrating in how poorly they were handled, Dirt 2 is still a good, fun racing game in a genre that's underrepresented on every console. I really enjoyed playing Dirt 2. It breaks my heart really to give it a low overall score, but you just can't expect people to pay high prices for very little content.

I really liked the follow up but this is one of my favorite games ever.

I learned a lot about not just throttling every race and hoping for the best. There's some hand-eye coordination involved with this thing as well as some patience, persistence, and a sense of being on the edge even though you're not really in the car. I like that there's a variety of race types and challenges along the way. Being able to skip around is really nice too because I found if I went to a different location and raced a different type or race I could come back to whatever I was having trouble with instead of having to just push through and be frustrated.

The graphics are great. No real hangups at all with the quality of the game or the controls. Maybe it's not totally realistic, but there's a lot of variety. You can customize your ride a bit more which is something I discovered I miss about Dirt 3. If I had to choose, I'd say go with Dirt 2. Definitely my favorite racing game. This games is so beautiful to look at, and you can tell that people worked very hard to make such a polished gaming experience.

The realism is actually what takes away from the game for me, though. The vehicles control so realistically, and everything feels like it's almost real world. But it just doesn't feel fun. It's more for the realistic racing sim fan. If you like gran turismo games, you would feel right at home with this one. The only thing that makes it feel a bit arcadey is the rewind feature when you crash. You get a couple icons per event that allow you rewind time after you crash.

It's kind of like the sand dagger in the prince of persia games. That does give you at least one feature that I really enjoyed. I will say, though, that there is definitely an audience for this game. Alot of people will enjoy the realism, and awesome graphics.

But if you're looking for an arcade type racer, with cool crashes, and an insane sense of speed, this title doesn't really deliver. I liked the price and convenient of shipping the item to me. The item was packaged basic but effective. The item was available online but hard to find in my town. Lots of fun from a classic Rally game. Not very technical.

My son loves it. The only drawback is you can not tune your vehicle. Get it if you can find it. After reading reviews I decided to buy the previous version. Dirt 2 has a lot going for it too but in different areas.

The races feature longer duration and more tracks without buying DLC. Graphics haven't changed much except menus so it doesn't feel old. You really need both versions to get everything in a dirt race. I can't pick a favorite. One person found this helpful. Keogh Top Contributor: Cooking. You will be using, light feathering on the gas to keep your speed up and control-wise you are working to line up jumps, start a drift and hand brake around loose hairpins.

The rest of it is pure adrenalin and rebel yells. I recommend this game to anybody who loves Rally too bad it isn't more publicised in the US and to anyone who wants to fully enjoy the XBOX racing experience without the need for a seperate racing rig in the middle of your living room or lap. I haven't tried a dirt racing game since the old Dirt series several years ago and they were terrible.

This one is pretty good. The graphics aren't as good as some of the other newer racing games, but overall they work. It's not buggy with the patch and game play is straight forward. Just what youy would expect in a dirt racing series. The AI is a too hard for my taste, even in casual mode, once you get a few races under your belt, the AI is just about unbeatable unless you crash them into rocks, trees and walls.

To me, that's not racing, but I can see that the majority of buyers probably just want a crash derby in any racing game they buy as evidenced in the online tournaments of any racing game. So if it's a crash derby, bull your way to the top, run 'em down kind of race, than Dirt 2 is the one for you. Plenty of tracks in many countries and really they did a lot of work on the tracks.

They are hard to get through and the cars are loose even with the very limited car settings. I think they could have done better at giving us more adjustment room for setting up dialing in cars, but something has always got to be missing or you wouldn't look forward to the next in the series. Overall it's fun to run the tracks if you don't mind the AI beating you most of the time. Additional - I have to say that with most every game I have come across there are issues. Many times the issues are ones that we "gamers" have brought upon ourselves.

Gaming machines are buggy and unstable many times, due to the overclocking of components and due to the nature of "cutting edge" components as they usually have more issues than the components designed for slower speeds and better stability. When you see all the complaints about not being able to run a game, it's usually more of the lack of expertise of the "gamer" including me , than of the game itself, but every game usually runs way better after a "patch", since they are seemingly always put out with problems.

This game ran super smooth on my machine, but it runs much smoother at medium settings than ultra settings. That's normal with a game and truthfully I cannot see the visual difference, but the stability is so much better. Most games run much smoother with medium settings for the graphics. I love this game! I'm a total adrenaline junkie when it comes to racing games, or games in general, and this game delivers.

I'll be the first to admit that I get bored very fast with games that make you sit through movies or work you way through a story before you get to the action. Not with this game. It gets right into the racing fun and action. I've only had Dirt 2 for a week and I've already put hours of play into it. I'd probably play it all day if I could. The visuals, simulation and sound are top notch in my opinion. Each vehicle has it's own unique handling characteristics, and the engine sounds are pretty authentic.

There are dozens of vehicles to choose from with several configurations for each vehicle. And with lots of races all over the world to participate in, I should be busy with this game for quite a while! Installation was no problem and the game runs very smooth on my PC.

I've had no problems at all running the game or with Windows Live. For ten bucks the price is definitely worth it. And if Dirt 2 is any indication of what Dirt 3 is like, I'll be getting that too! I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a great racing game at a great price. Time to get Dirty! This review is for the PC version. The graphics on this game are amazing! The cars look fantastic and the dust kicked up by cars in front of you are so realistic looking.

I find myself losing concentration at times and just enjoying the graphics. As far as game play I haven't tried the online mode so cannot comment on that but playing against the computer opponents is pretty fun. The realism seems to be just right you can set the level - I have it set to Serious. I am not a hard core simulation person but I immensely dislike arcade style driving games. This game is way above an arcade style game. The force feedback effects are great. You can really tell when you are losing grip on the front end because of loose gravel.

Anyway, a very well done game. Keep up the good work Codemasters! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. Report abuse Translate review to English.
